Stone Carving & Dressing Edinburgh

Stone Sculptures

Granite is the hardest stone carving. Instead of carving with a hammer and chisel, you must use a carbide-tipped tools, diamond saws and grinders. Granite can have a very fine grain or a very course one. It comes in a number of colors, can be highly polished and is durable for outdoor garden stone sculptures.

What is dressing stone and why is it required?

Stones obtained from quarrying does not contain required shapes and sizes using a stone dressing chisel and stone dressing hammers. So, they are cut into required sizes and shapes with suitable surfaces. This process is called stone dressing. It is preferable that the stones should be dressed at quarry site which reduces cost of transportation.

Types of stone used in stone carving

Limestone and sandstone, at about 4 on the Mohs scale, are the only sedimentary stones commonly carved stones. Limestone comes in a popular oolitic variety, about twice as hard as alabaster, that is excellent for carving stones. The harder serpentines can also reach 4 on the Mohs scale.
